fripSide

fripSide is a two-person band from Japan. Here’s a little insight on the people this blog is about.
Producer Satoshi Yaginuma
(lyrics, music, arrangement, synthesizer)
Satoshi is the musical genius behind fripSide.
“Satoshi came from a creative family. His mother was a piano teacher, and his father was a photographer and painter. Since 3 years old, he has been learning piano and violin. Through fripSide he offers his indie music. He produces mainly through synthesizers. Since the age of 14, he has done various things like bands to help his musical career.”
Translated Profile from satoshi’s official site (no longer online)
Before fripSide, Satoshi was in a band that also uploaded their music on muzie. This band’s page no longer exists, but the band was called distreview, and songs included “still lovin you” (a fripSide cover was supposed to be included on 3rd reflection), “belief…” and “belief.. -2002dance mix 2.1″ (fripSide’s “belief” may be a cover of this song), “eternal pain” and “your breeze.” (just going on assumption here, but I’m pretty sure you aren’t ever going to find these songs)
According to their PickUp artist interview with muzie, sat has stated he would like fripSide to go to “higher stages” (more popular). He also likes cars and motorcycles. (Source)
According to NEXT STAGE special interview, Satoshi’s ‘inspiration’ so to speak, comes from Japanese composer Tetsuya Komuro, who’s composed for artists like Namie Amuro and Nami Tamaki.
In an entry on Feb. 6, 2005, sat said on his blog and in the 3rd album liner notes that “distant moon” is fripSide’s theme song.
Yoshino Nanjou
(vocals, lyrics)
fripSide’s newest vocalist. Yoshino Nanjou officially joined fripSide after nao’s departure in 2009. She is a Japanese voice actress. You can look up her works here at Anime News Network. She’s also cohost of the HiBiKi Radio show “Yoshino Nanjo and Saaya’s Sister Control” (Nanjou Yoshino to Saaya no Imouto Control), which airs every Friday since April 27, 2010.
Nanjou’s nickname is Nanjolno, written ナンジョルノ.
nao (2002-2009)
(vocals, lyrics)
nao was fripSide’s first vocalist from fripSide’s beginning in 2002 to March 15, 2009. She was born in Nado-city in the Chiba Prefecture of Japan on January 26, and has Type ‘O’ blood. Her favorite artists include HAL, and m.o.v.e , and she has mentioned a liking to TM Revolution.
nao has been a musically-inclined person all her life. Since she was very little, nao has played the piano. In highschool, wind instruments were her speciality. She didn’t start singing until she joined up with fripSide:
I became [a singer] because I thought, ‘I want to do something different!’, and I considered if I wanted to sing. As for vocals, fripSide’s become the first activity.
However, she does not perform instruments in any songs, although she said she could if there were written music. fripSide’s first live performance, on March 20, 2005, was also nao’s first live performance. (Source)
nao’s main role in fripSide was vocals. She also has aided in writing some of the lyrics, but has only written 5 completely herself (“Colorless fate”, “bright days”, “in the future”, “save me again”, and “Your Ocean”). nao played the piano in “hurting heart-nao piano arrange.”
She is currently the singer for DystopiaGround and also releases under her own name.
Band Information
(this is from the profile I wrote for fripSide’s last.fm page)
The name “fripSide” comes from the word “flipside.” It’s a direct reference to when one had to flip records to side B. Since Flipside was already taken by a foreign artist, Sat coined the word “fripSide.” The capital S comes from Satoshi’s name.
fripSide had a very successful start on the indie community muzie in 2002. All three of their first albums topped their muzie’s monthly shop ranking, and many of their songs had thousands of downloads. In 2006, fripSide signed with Japanese gaming company Visual Art’s and started releasing under elseena-music entertainment. fripSide NAO project!, fripSide’s denpa alter-ego, began April 2007. March 15, 2009, fripSide’s original vocalist nao retired. Yoshino Nanjo was welcomed as the new vocalist in July 2009.

Sound Staff

  • yuki-ka (lyrics)
  • Takahiro Toguchida (guitar)
  • a2c [from MintJam] (guitar)

Collaborated

a2c (from MintJam)
a2c’s version of “Crying Moon” sounds less traditional than fripSide’s version, and is sung by a guy! a2c is a member of the band MintJam and composed the original “Crying Moon”. Note that the lyrics are also different.
masa (from azure)
masa, a staff member, also has his own muzie page. On his page, you’ll find a different arrangement acoustic version of “Crying Moon”.
reset
reset is another amazing artist and has worked with fripSide! On their page you can find many great songs, including a short version of the original “Detour”, named “Detour ~UNPLUGED version~”. fripSide’s “escape-version 2008-” is a cover of reset’s popular song “escape”.
TRI-HEDGE
TRI-HEDGE was a techno/trance producer.  They composed the music for “tearful voice” and the remix for “belief”.
HEAVENS WiRE
Another electronic artist, HEAVENS WiRE made an amazing remix of “Love to Sing”! You can get the remix for free here.
R&T Factory
R&T Factory has some great trance, but they also have a version of “Love to Sing” too! It’s the R&T Factory Remix. This 80′s style remix is available for download, and was never released on a fripSide album (until nao complete anthology).
sLAB
sLAB worked with other artists to help produce their music. kai (of sLab and AURA KITE) created the remix of “sky” included on 3rd reflection of fripSide. He also made the remixes of “an evening calm” and “magicaride”
